Hot bats and pitching lead Pacific Grove Baseball JV to a 14-2 win over visiting Greenfield

Pacific Grove JV Baseball team (1-0) got off to a great start to the season
with a 14-2 victory over Greenfield JV.  PG was led by 4 hits from left fielder
Desi Green and superb pitching by Jackson Destefano & Zach Malone who each struck out four batters and gave up no earned runs.

Coach Gabe Ruiz’ PG nine pounded out 11 hits including three doubles (Destefano,
third baseman JJ Courtney, & catcher Nathan Wood). PG was also the recipient of 10 walks from the opposition plus a hit batsman. Jordan Booker (three walks), Chianti Carter (two walks and a HB), and Jay McMahon (two walks) all received a “free-90” more than once.

Destefano surrendered only a single and a walk in three innings. In the first inning he picked off a runner at first with Chad Ventimiglia putting on the tag.

Green started the offense for PG on the right note with the first of his four singles.

PG broke open the scoring with an eight-run second inning. Chad Ventimiglia led off with a single and before the inning was over PG walked six times and banged out four hits including a two-rbi single by Malone.

Wood and Courtney both had nice throw outs of runners at first, Wood’s in the third on a swinging bunt that he had to dance around at home plate before he could pick it up and
Courtney’s in the fourth on a bunt that he had to charge in from third to grab and throw out the runner by a step.

Greenfield got on the board with two unearned runs in the fourth, aided by two PG errors and a hit batter. However the inning ended with a nifty Ventimiglia (1B) to Destefano (SS) to Courtney (3B) tag out of a runner attempting to advance.

In the fourth PG had a five-run two-out rally. After Courtney and Green singled, Destefano followed with an RBI-double and two batters later Wood drove in two (of his three RBIs) with a double.  A costly Greenfield error plated the last two runs.

After Malone struck out the side in the top of the fifth, PG closed out the game in the bottom of the inning with the bench coming in big.  After a lead off double by Courtney, pinch hitter  Clint Cargile followed with a single. The game ended when pinch hitter Aidan Borman hit a ground ball to the right side to bring in Courtney with the winning run (12 run rule after five innings).

Courtney scored three runs while, Green, Destefano, Booker, and Wood had two each.

PG & Greenfield meet again on Friday, March 9, in Greenfield.
