PG JV Baseball rolls to 2-0 in a 16-0 shut out of Greenfield

Pacific Grove JV Baseball team (2-0) won their second game of the season in a rematch of game one against host Greenfield JV. Once again Coach Gabe Ruiz’ pitching staff was outstanding.  Jay McMahon & JJ Courtney combined for five innings of two-hit shut out ball, each striking out two Bruins. Greenfield managed only four baserunners in the five inning contest. The Breakers have yet to allow an earned run in the season.

McMahon shut down the side 1-2-3 in the first on seven pitches.  The Breakers got on the board with two runs in the top of the second. Chad Ventimiglia doubled to lead off the inning followed by a walk to Jackson Destefano. Both eventually scored after a series of wild pitches and an error to give PG a 2-0 lead.

Greenfield managed a walk in their half of the second. After the runner stole second base, the Bruins knocked a single in front of left fielder Desi Green who fielded the ball cleanly and threw a one hop strike to catcher Chianti Carter who put the tag on the runner trying to score from second for the final out.

The PG bats came alive in the third where they banged out eight hits, received six walks, two hit batsmen (both were Carter who almost seemed to enjoy taking the cowhide to his back and thigh) and a Greenfield error.  Green led off with a single followed by a walk to Nathan Wood, and Carter’s first hit by pitch to load the bases.  Destefano knocked in the first run with a single followed by third baseman Zach Malone stroking a two-run double to left field. After a walk to Mario Bonelli, Clint Cargile, who had three assists at second, singled to drive in Malone. Jordan Booker then singled in Bonelli from second.

Green came up for the second time in the inning and walked, as did Wood, and Carter was again hit by a pitch. A new pitcher entered the game, but met the same results. Ventimiglia socked a two-run single to right field, Destefano reached on an error, and Malone singled in Ventimiglia. Booker’s single knocked in Malone after walks to Bonelli and Cargile.  With the #2 spot coming up in the order for the third time, Greenfield was able to get the second and third outs.

Courtney came on to pitch in the bottom of the third and had a 1-2-3 inning and allowed just a hit batter in the fourth. The PG bats went silent after their big third inning with no hits the rest of the way.  Courtney closed out the game in the fifth. After giving up a one-out single, he induced the next Greenfield batter to hit a grounder to shortstop Destefano who gathered up the ball stepped on second and threw to first for the game-ending double play (12-run rule after five innings).

All nine starting hitters reached base safely at least twice.  Booker, Ventimiglia, & Malone each contributed two hits while Green, Carter, and Cargile all reached base safely three times (Wood, Destefano, Bonelli did it twice each). Destefano scored three times while Green, Wood, Carter, Ventimiglia, and Malone all crossed the plate twice. Malone led the way with three RBIs while Booker, Ventimiglia, and Cargile had two each.

Next up for PG JV, an away game at Solecito Field in Monterey on Thu, March 15 at 7pm under the lights.
