Tuesday (May 8) was senior day at Soledad as they hosted Pacific Grove in their last home game of the season. With a win the Aztecs would take the 2018 MTAL baseball title and that is just what they did at the expense of PG’s pitchers, 20-1.
Soledad amassed thirteen hits, seven walks, and four hit batsmen. Except for a home run by Ben Pajas over the left field fence and a double by Isaac Lopez, none of the hits were excessively hard, but more of duck snorts into the shallow outfield grass. Soledad starting pitcher Anthony Ramirez went four innings allowing three hits and just one run. Christopher Villareal closed out the game in the fifth.
Pacific Grove had opportunities but could only manage one run in the second inning. Kevahn Ebron led off with a walk followed by a long single to the left field wall by Daniel Rosas to put runners on first and second. Freshman Nathan Wood followed with a perfect bunt down the third base line (his fourth bunt hit of the season) to load the bases. A ground ball to the Soledad shortstop turned into a 6-4-3 double play, but allowed Ebron to score. Sean Powell, Jackson Destefano, and Hunter Hanes all contributed singles to the PG effort.
Soledad batted around in each of the first three innings scoring six, nine, and five runs. However, Breakers reliever Dylan Graham came on in the fourth and stopped the offensive onslaught holding the Aztecs scoreless while striking out two.
PG’s defensive play of the day was a diving catch by centerfielder Hanes in the second to rob Ramirez of a hit. Earlier the same inning, third baseman Wood battled major Salinas Valley wind to corral an orbit seeking pop fly.
At the end of the game, the Soledad announcer announced that this victory clinched the MTAL title for the Aztecs.
PG (12-14 overall, 11-6 in the MTAL) hosts Soledad on Thursday (May 10) to close out the regular season and will be honoring its four senior players (Anthony Aliotti, Colby Burnell, Connor Marshall, and River Watts).
Carter’s two-home run day leads JV Breakers to victory over Soledad, 16-4
Pacific Grove’s JV baseball team was hosted by Soledad on Tuesday (May 8) in their last road game of the season. The strong Salinas Valley winds did not bother the Breakers as they triumphed in a 16-4 victory over the Aztecs.
Catcher Chianti Carter led the way with two home runs and five runs batted in. PG tallied three runs in the first off of a single by JJ Courtney, double by Charlie McMahon and Carter’s first home run. In the second, PG added another two runs. Mario Bonelli had a long double aided by walks to McMahon and Carter and singles by Zach Malone and Jay McMahon. The wheels came off of the Soledad wagon in the fourth when the Breakers put across eleven runs. Highlights were Carter’s second home run (plus a single), a single and double by Courtney, C.McMahon’s second double of the day (plus a walk), two singles from Jay McMahon, a single by Bonelli, and walks to Aidan Borman and Desi Green. PG knocked out 11 hits in the inning.
The game was called after four innings and PG pitcher Colton Bell struck out nine and allowed just three hits in his complete game victory.
PG (12-9 overall, 8-3 league) hosts Soledad on Thursday (May 10) at 4pm at the JV Field for their final game of the season.
